How Burglar Alarms Protect Your Home

For the best protection against home break-ins, burglar alarms are a must. Studies show installing a burglar alarm and having a dog are the most effective measures you can take to protect your house and your family. Dead-bolt locks are also a recommended measure to decrease crime. Homeowners with alarms experience fewer break-ins, and report significantly less property loss than those without a home alarm system. A quality system is the first step, but carelessness can thwart the effectiveness of any system. Many incidents are reported when systems are not turned on or properly armed.

Alarm systems are only one measure in protecting your home against crime, but installing a reliable system is a good first step. Simple and inexpensive burglar alarm equipment, which you can install yourself, can be purchased at home centers. More sophisticated alarm systems include installation and a monthly monitoring fee provided by a home security company. A monitoring company will reduce false alarms, by verifying calls before contacting the police.

Installing Confidence

The more entry points to your home that are armed, the better your protection against burglars. Reliable installers also offer motion detectors, sensors to monitor glass breakage, and even smoke and carbon-monoxide detectors. When a protected door or window is opened or broken, the monitoring company is alerted. If these alarm calls are verified, then the company notifies the police. Several false alarms mean a fine from the police in many cities, so the added verification feature of the larger installers like ADT or Brink’s will also save you money.

An alarm is only a good source of protection against crime if it is used properly and consistently. Ensure that your installer explains how to arm and disarm the system, and shows you how motion detection devices work. Make sure that you respond quickly to the monitoring company when an alarm is tripped.
