Digital Surveillance Systems – Home Security of the Future
Digital surveillance is the hottest new technology in security monitoring, and has become an essential security tool for homes and businesses. Coupled with new camera surveillance software, these new systems provide faster and more intelligent security monitoring.
The primary reason for moving from analog to digital for camera surveillance is that intelligence can be embedded in the surveillance system itself-as well as in the network-instead of relying on human beings watching security monitors.
These new platforms combine high performance processors with low power chipsets, offering fast MPEG4 encoding, wireless access and software-triggered system alarms. Some of their features are valuable particularly to businesses, as they provide great cost savings. For example, these new systems can be motion activated, meaning that the surveillance camera is only recording when there is movement in the camera’s viewing area. This saves an unbelievable amount of storage room, as no video is being created when no one is in front of the camera.
Can Digital Equipment Work with Your Existing System?
Since this digital technology is so new, it is likely that it will need to work within traditional analog systems for some time. For example, the software may acquire the data through a digital camera and perform some immediate digital image processing. Then the data may be converted to analog so it can be distributed over the existing infrastructure. Finally it can be recovered back to digital data for storage.
Typical systems like these consist of a digital video recorder, quad monitor, and four-color cameras with mounts and cables, and cost in the neighborhood of $2000, making them too expensive for many homeowners. However, as the technology progresses, the prices will likely fall, making these surveillance systems more attractive to the consumer market. So keep on the lookout, in the next year or so your home security system may jump far into the future.
