Apartment Intercoms – A Good Measure of Security
If you’re in the market to find a new apartment, one of your main concerns should be the security of your new building. No doubt you will be coming and going at all hours of the day and night, and will want to feel comfortable that your new home is secure. In addition, you and your neighbors will have visitors coming in and out, so your building needs to have means to ensure that the people who enter have legitimate reason to be there. Intercoms, along with other apartment security precautions, should be items that you address with your landlord before signing a lease.
Particularly if you live in a high-rise building, an intercom should be on the top of your list of priorities. Your building should be locked, and those without a key should be required to be “buzzed in” by a tenant. This will ensure that people are not allowed to wander in and out of the building at will.
In addition to the intercom, your building should have security cameras located at the intercom, so that security guards can monitor who goes in and out. This feature is a great help to the police if a crime is committed in your building.
Other Security Features to Look For
Another important feature to look for is strong protective locks on your windows. Even with security cameras, thieves can climb to areas of the building that are not as well monitored, and enter through the windows. Alarms on your windows provide an extra measure of protection, as well. Be sure that the door to your apartment is equipped with dead bolt locks, and a peephole.
Searching for a new home is fun and exciting. Just be sure that in your excitement you don’t forget to look after your safety. Spending a few minutes with your landlord to go over the security features of the apartment building will provide you with the assurance that your new home will be your safe haven.
